Prevent C-9 from Criminalizing Religion
Whereas, the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms guarantees to everyone in Canada the right to freedom of conscience and religion;
Whereas, open and free discussion is vital to a healthy democracy;
Whereas, over 22 million Canadians practice a faith rooted in ancient, sacred texts that may be deemed hateful by their opponents;
Whereas, the recent amendment to Bill C-9 effectively criminalises living out a publicly religious life, which includes speaking, writing, and/or publishing religious content;
Whereas, in so doing Bill C-9 violates Canadians’ freedom of religion, as protected in S2(A) of the Charter;
We, the undersigned, citizens of Canada, call upon Justice Canada and the Hon. Sean Fraser, Minister of Justice, to reject any criminalization of religion, including proposed amendments to Bill C-9, and reaffirm their support of S2(A) of the Charter affirming the right of Canadians to freedom of conscience and religion.
